When to visit Punta del Este: month by month

The honest answer comes in three parts. January and February are the full town, with the sea at 22 °C and everything open until dawn. March and the first half of December are the same beach without the queue. And winter is low sun, wind, whales and a peninsula that belongs again to the eighteen thousand people who live on it: not the season for the beach, but the season for walking it.

Punta del Este does not have a best month; it has a best month for each plan, and the plans contradict each other.
Beach with people, and nightlife
20 December to mid-February
The Brava full, La Barra until sunrise, New Year's Eve on the sand, Carnival. In return, the year's highest prices, the queues and ride-hailing apps with no cars.

In March the people have left and the warm water has not; in December everything is already open and nobody has arrived. Lifeguards on the sand, prices below January's. If you have to pick one month, it is March.

The best light of the year, highs between 16 and 21 °C, the peninsula for the people who live on it. The port, Casapueblo, the lighthouse and the two promenades work just as in January, with nobody in front of you.

February has the warmest sea of the year, lifeguards every day and slightly fewer people than January. In July, the sea lions in the port, Casapueblo, the whales and the hotels with heated pools on the Mansa.

What does not change with the month is the wind. It blows almost every day, harder in spring and summer than in the depth of winter, and it is the reason the Brava has waves and the Mansa has none. A January day with a southerly feels cool on the sand; a windless, sunny July day like the one in the photo is a walk in a sweatshirt.

One detail before choosing: the station that measures is on the peninsula, surrounded by water. At the airport, fifteen kilometres inland, January days are a degree or two hotter and July nights colder, and weather apps usually show the airport.
The narrated walk has no season: «La otra Punta del Este» is walked the same way in January with the Brava full and in July with the promenade empty, and in July you hear it with less noise around you.
January and February: the season, the good and the expensive
The high season has no official date; the services set it. Lifeguards every day from 1 December, cruise ships from mid-month, direct flights from Brazil from mid-December to late February, beach bars until Easter week. What people call «the season» is shorter: 20 December to mid-February, with the peak between New Year's Eve and 15 January, when 95 % of hotel beds are taken and estate agents rent by the fortnight.
In January 2026 a double hotel room with breakfast started at US$ 120 on the Mansa and 150 on the peninsula, and a studio rented for 3,000 to 3,500 a fortnight; in February all of that drops by 20 to 30 %. From the summer of 2027 parking on the peninsula is paid for the four summer months. If you are coming in January for the first time, book in October and choose the area before the hotel: in season, staying on the peninsula or at stop 20 is the difference between walking and looking for parking.
March and December: the shoulders of summer
If you had to keep one month, it is March: the sea still 22 °C, lifeguards until early April, the season's restaurants still open and the people back at work. Easter week, 22 to 28 March 2027, is the last wave and that week you should book. March's mirror is the first half of December: the sunniest and driest month, the sea already at 20 °C, the whole town open and January's prices still far away. From the 20th onwards it is the season.
Winter: what stays open from June to August
The question asked most often is whether it is worth it, and it depends on what for. For the beach, no. For almost everything else, yes, with one advantage summer does not have: the town is empty and keeps working, because it is not a resort that shuts but a town of eighteen thousand people, joined to Maldonado, with which it adds up to more than a hundred and thirty thousand.

The beach bars, most of the nightlife of La Barra and José Ignacio, the lifeguards, the cruise ships and the direct flights from Brazil. The Mansa towers from stop 8 onwards keep their shutters down.

From April to November there are no lifeguards on any beach, and the July sea is the temperature of a mountain lake. October's sunny days are deceptive: the shore is for walking.
To calibrate the cold: a mean high of 14 °C in July, a mean low of 9 °C, ten rainy days in the month and wind nearly always. It is not the winter of Bariloche or of northern Europe; it is the winter of a damp coast, where the same day starts in fog and ends in sunshine. The right coat is a windbreaker. And winter has its own week: the July school holidays, at the start of the month in Uruguay and in Brazil, when the hotels with heated pools on the Mansa fill with families and the rest of the town stays empty.

What is the best time to visit Punta del Este?
For the beach with everything open and no crowd, March and the first half of December: sea between 20 and 22 °C, lifeguards, prices below January's. For the season with its people and its nightlife, late December to mid-February. For walking, any month except the worst of June and July, with the best light in April, May, October and November.
When does the season start in Punta del Este?

What is Punta del Este like in winter? Is it worth visiting?
Empty, open and cold: a mean high of 14 °C in July, sea at 12 °C, sunset at half past five, wind. Worth it for walking the peninsula, seeing the sea lions in the port, going to Casapueblo and watching whales from the promenade between July and October. Not worth it for the beach.
Can you swim in March? And in December?
In March, yes: the sea averages 22 °C, the same as January, with lifeguards until early April. In December the sea is at 20 °C and the lifeguards work from the 1st. In November, at 18 °C, the hardy swim; in May, at 17 °C, hardly anyone.
When can you see whales in Punta del Este?
From July to October, with the most animals in August and September. They are southern right whales that come into Maldonado Bay to calve, and they are watched from the shore: the Mansa promenade, the Brava, Punta Ballena. Look in the morning or at sunset and on days with little wind.
Is Punta del Este expensive? Is it safe?
In January it is expensive: a double room from US$ 120 on the Mansa and 150 on the peninsula, a studio at 3,000 to 3,500 a fortnight. February drops 20 to 30 % and from May to October it costs a fraction; what you come to see is free all year. It is a quiet resort town in one of the safest countries in the region; what does exist is seasonal petty theft, the bag left alone on the sand and the car with things in view.

What does not depend on the calendar is «La otra Punta del Este»: a narrated walk that starts at La Mano and follows the peninsula, told by Graciela, who was born here and has seen it full and empty. It lasts an hour, plays on your phone, and is walked in a swimsuit or a coat.
